Andrey Silnov - not initially selected in the russian olympic team after only finishing fourth at the russian trials - won the gold medal with a best height of 2.36m. He only just missed 2.42m which would have smashed the olympic record. Germaine Mason of Great Britain was second with 2.34m, and the russian Yaroslav Rybakov was third with 2.34m. Sorry about the stupid commentator and his erroneous comments (eg, Stefan Holm being undefeated for two years!), he knows jack-all about track and field. 2008 Olympics, Mens High Jump |

Paraskevi (Voula) Patoulidou, running in lane 5, on 8.6.1992, wins the first Greek track and field Gold Olympic medal, in the 1992 games, in Barcelona Spain, since Spyridon Louis won the Gold in the marathon, in the first Olympics in Athens on 4.10.1896. Voula was also the first Greek female athlete, ever, to reach an Olympic track and field final. When she realized she won the race, she screamed the immortal: "Gia tin Ellada, gamoto" meaning "For Greece's sake, damn it". Spyridon Louis won the 40 Km race in 2hours 58min 50sec. Fellow Greek and favorite for the race Harilaos Vassilakos came second and Gyula Kellner from Hungary was third. Paraskevi Patoulidou wins 100m |

On Friday, October 5, 2007, Marion Jones admits to steroid use and lying to federal investigators. The brief press conference was held right after the US District Court hearing where she pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators. ---------- I was a big Marion Jones fan for all these years. And as a fan who wanted to believe in her, this was really tough to watch. I'm really disappointed in her. I don't know what upsets me more, the fact that she cheated, or the fact that she lied about it for so many years. It's unsettling and somewhat frightening to realize just how adept of a liar she was. All those years of looking into the camera and reassuring her fans of her innocence, of passing lie-detector tests, of carrying herself with such poise and confidence. She was so articulate, so intelligent, so charismatic, so beautiful, and so athletically gifted -- you really wanted to believe her and believe IN her. This is just so disappointing. The press conference made me sick to my stomach. This is a dark day for the sport of Track and Field. But at least there's now some sort of answer and closure to the Marion Jones saga. Maybe now track can finally move on, and focus on the current generation of athletes -- the ones who are running clean, are working hard off their own abilities, are honest, and who truly love the sport. Tyson Gay (born August 9, 1982) is an American track and field sprinter. His primary events are the 100 meters and 200 meters. His personal bests establish him as the second fastest athlete in the 100 meter dash and the third fastest athlete in the history of the 200 meter dash, with times of 9.69 (which is a United States record[1]) and 19.58 seconds respectively. Gay has won numerous medals in major international competitions, highlighted by his gold medal sweep of the 100 m, 200 m and 4 x 100 meters relay at the 2007 Osaka World Championships. This made Gay the 200 m World Championships record holder and only the second sprinter to win all three events at the same World Championships, after Maurice Greene. At the 2008 US Olympic Trials Gay established the US record in the 100 m with a time of 9.77 s, and also ran the second fastest time ever recorded in the 100 m (9.68 s) which was aided by a non-legal wind of 4.1 meters per second (the allowable for official IAAF record purposes being 2.0 m/s). At the same meet, Gay suffered a severe hamstring injury in the 200 m event. The injury persisted and this contributed to his failure to win a single medal at the Beijing Olympics. As a participant in the US Anti-Doping Agency's "Project Believe" program, Gay is regularly tested to ensure that his system is clean of performance-enhancing drugs. Tyson Gay |
