It was no surprise to me to see Walter Dix win the finals of the 200m dash at the 2008 United States Track and Field Olympic Trials. Even in an abreviated season, Walter was dominating in the late spring. With Shawn Crawford and Wallace Spearmon the rest of the world needs to watch out for the United States (even you, Jamaica!). The winning time was 19.86 and there is an interview by Bob Neumeier at the end that is pretty good. The NBC team of Tom Hammond, Ato Boldon, Ed Eyestone, Carol Lewis, Lewis Johnson and Dwight Stones are on hand as well as a post race interview with the winner by Bob Neuman. NBC SPORTS does a great job, especially with Olympic events! Walter Dix - 200m FINAL US Oly |

USA wins the 4 x 100m relay at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in a then World Record time of 39.06 seconds. The improbable victory was made possible by the phenomenally swift anchor leg run by Robert Lee "Bullet Bob" Hayes. His leg was quite possibly the fastest ever (8.50 seconds hand timed) according to many pundits. Jocelyn Delecour, France's anchor leg runner, famously said to Paul Drayton before the relay final that "you can't win, all you have is Bob Hayes." Drayton was able to reply, after the race "all you need..." This relay race was Hayes' last race as a track and field athlete, he permanently switched to football(NFL) after the 64' Olympic games. Donnaguska, a first time starter owned by Billy Hays and trained by Joe Woodard, makes a remarkable stretch run to win her debut by two and a quarter lengths at Hawthorne Race Course on October 23, 2008. As track announcer Peter Galassi noted, Donnaguska was "far, far, far, far back" early under jockey Israel Ocampo. The three-year-old daughter of Yonaguska was sent off at 17-1, the second longest shot in the field of nine. She is number three, but for most of the video that doesn't matter because you won't see her. According to the official chart she was about 23 1/2 lengths behind at the top of the stretch, meaning she ran her final quarter-mile in roughly :21 1/5. Horse racing oddity: incredibl |
