Usain Bolt sets world record in 100 meters. NEW YORK (AP) - Like lightning out of nowhere, Usain Bolt is now the world's fastest man. The Jamaican sprinter, who doesn't even consider the 100 meters his best race, set the world record Saturday night with a time of 9.72 seconds at the Reebok Grand Prix, .02 seconds faster than the old mark held by his countryman, Asafa Powell. Bolt was using the 100 as "speed work" to get better for his favorite race, the 200, and also to avoid having to run the more grueling 400. Then, unexpectedly, he ran the world's second-fastest time a few weeks ago at 9.76. Even with that, he said he wasn't sure if he would switch out the 400 for the 100 at the Beijing Olympics. "I think that will change today," Bolt said. "It doesn't matter if I have the world record if I don't have the Olympic medal." Springing from the starting block and unfurling his lanky frame - listed at 6-foot-4, but probably more like 6-5 and, either way, considered too tall for this kind of speed work - he created a big-time gap between himself and Tyson Gay at about the halfway point, then routed America's top sprinter to the finish line. "I wasn't really looking for a world record, but it was there for the taking," Bolt said. Gay finished in 9.85. "Obviously, I have some work to do," Gay said. "Right now, it's hats off to Bolt. Today was his day." As he crossed the finish line, Bolt spread his arms out wide and let out a yell. A few moments later, the 21-year-old from ... Usain Bolt BREAKS THE 100m WOR |

Usain Bolt breaks the world record and sets a new world record Usain Bolt (born 21 August 1986) is a Jamaican sprinter.[1] He is the reigning Olympic champion over 100 metres and holds both world and Olympic 100 metres records with a time of 9.69 seconds. Bolt is also the world junior record holder in the 200 metres (19.93 seconds), and Jamaican national record holder in the 200 metres (19.67 seconds). His name and achievements in sprinting have earned him the media nickname "Lightning Bolt". Bolt was born in Trelawny, Jamaica,[3] to Jennifer and Wellesley Bolt.[4] As a child he was successful in the annual, national primary schools' meeting for his parish,[2] and enjoyed playing cricket, specialising in fast bowling. Upon his entry to William Knibb Memorial High School, his cricket coach noticed Bolt's speed on the pitch and urged him to try track and field events.[5] Pablo mcneil and Dwayne Barrett coached Bolt, encouraging him to focus his energy on improving his athletic abilities. The school had a history of athletic success with past students including Michael Green.[2] Bolt won his first annual high school championships medal in 2001, attaining the silver medal in the 200 metres with a time of 22.04 seconds.[2] Performing in his first Caribbean national event, Bolt clocked a personal best of 48.28 seconds in the 400 metres in the 2001 CARIFTA games, earning himself a silver medal.[6] The 200 metres also yielded a silver as Bolt finished in 21.81 seconds. On April 7, harness racing driver Tony Morgan towed a horse for half a race at Yonkers Raceway after the horse's driver was thrown from the sulky during an accident. The Youtube link contains the entire race, which shows the accident as the horses come around the second turn, plus two angles of Morgan pulling the horse across the finish line at the end while driving his horse. Tony Morgan wasn't expecting to drive Black Cat Bone in Saturday's (April 7) George Morton Levy Memorial division at Yonkers Raceway, but after the pacer was involved in an accident that unseated Patrick Berry, it was Morgan who ended up guiding the horse around the remainder of the track -- all while driving his own Village Jate N to a fifth place finish. Black Cat Bone unseated Berry after becoming tangled with a horse that went off stride during the opening half-mile. Morgan, who was following the field in seventh place, moved to the infield to avoid hitting the fallen Berry and was later able to grab Black Cat Bone as the loose horse followed behind Village Jate N. He had Black Cat Bone in tow for approximately half the race. "I've done it a few times before," said Morgan, who has 11089 wins in his career and is a four-time recipient of Harness Tracks of America's Driver of the Year Award. "He was following behind me, like they do in a race, and I reached over and grabbed a hold of him. My horse was pretty racy, so I just went on around. My horse was charging and wanted to finish the mile; I let ... Driver Tony Morgan grabs loose |
World Champion hurdler originally from Iowa and then LSU, LOLO JONES, one of the great positive ambassadors of the sport, wins the semifinal heat of the Women's 100m Hurdles at the United States Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon with the chance to go to Beijing for the USA!!! Ms. Jones time was 12.74, one one-hundreth faster than the previous semifinal heat! The NBC team of Tom Hammond, Ato Boldon, Ed Eyestone, Carol Lewis, Lewis Johnson and Dwight Stones are on hand as well as a post race interview with the winner by Bob Neuman. NBC SPORTS does a great job, especially with Olympic events! 100m Hurdles - Lolo Jones US O |
First of all, The loudest race of the Trials by a huge margin! Second of all, Christian Smith is NOT from Oregon. He is a Kansan, born and raised. Now to the race: Oregon grown,Nick Symmonds wins the 800m final at the United States Track and Field Olympic Trials in 1:44.12 with Andrew Wheating of Oregon placing second. In third is a uprooted Kansan in an Oregon uniform, Christian Smith diving for his place on the USA Track and Field Team. GREAT RACE! And Christian Smith is from KANSAS, not Oregon! TheNBC Sports crew is working in the booth with the great voice of Tom Hammond and the analysis and commentary by Ato Boldon and Lewis Johnson. Ed Eyestone, a former Olympian, also helps with the distance events and the great Dwight Stones handles the athlete interviews and the field events as only he can. Nick Symmonds - 800m Champion |
Wow! Has the Iowan/LSU grad made 2008 her year!!! After winning the World Indoor Championships in Valencia, she comes back and runs a 12.29 in the finals of the 100 meter hurdles in Eugene, Oregon at the United States Olympic Track and Field Trials. Damu Cherry finishes second with Dawn Harper in third to represent the USA in Beijing. Tom Hammond, Ato Boldon and Carol Lewis are usually in the booth for the great NBC staff with the added help of Ed Eyestone and Lewis Johnson also pitching in. On the track is Dwight Stones (always great) and handling the post race interviews is Bob Neumeier (whom I have been impressed with at this meet, asking quesions that are outside the normal, boring "How does it feel?" questions to every single athlete!). A few things about this video: This is yet another college project, basically I had to go to high school varsity/senior football games and get footage, then compile the best clips into a music video of sorts. The band is not anyone associated with me, found them by doing a search on Myspace though. All the editing, camerawork, planning, hell, everything with this video except the music itself was done by me. For once, I didn't procrastinate on this: a lot of different factors made it so that I only had about a week to work on this. The last 45 seconds of the video were done in 1 hour. :X Also, just for something interesting: save for a few clips from the first game (where i'm on the field), the rest of these clips were shot at the top of the bleachers, so almost all of these shots are at maximum zoom. I'd never shot anything like this before, but it was really a different experience, having to intuitively "track" where the ball was going to be after a pass, having to keep focused on the action, etc. It may not sound that hard, but having to do it at maximum zoom at 500 or so feet away is where the difficulty lies: the slightest movement sends your viewpoint flying across the field. Definitely one of my more entertaining projects though. (Yes, Rock Band/GH:WT videos are still coming, as always.) theonesandzeros.com Ones and Zeros - "I Can't Feel |
