This was a 250 meter VO2max test protocol which didn't quite nail it. We are using a Cosmed K4B2 with snorkel mask apparatus and a Suunto Memory Belt for HR capture. This is a joint collaboration between Seattle Performance Medicine and Pauole Sport from Seattle, Washington. We have now tried 250m and 300m continuous, and 400m, in 100m intervals. We are in search of the elusive max VO2 while swimming and we won't settle for simply a peak! Data was promising on the preceding 100 meter interval protocol, however we need to adjust the rest period as it was too long and the VO2 dropped 30 ml/kg/min despite a minimal drop in HR which took the athlete too long to catch back up to during the next 100 meters. So our next protocol will be to test another 100m interval protocol with shorter recoveries. The interval protocol produced 8 ml/kg/min higher VO2 than the peak we got on the 250 protocol. Researchers have used a 200meter protocol but have not successfully demonstrated a true max. We will not be satisfied until we do! We will test the new protocol in a few weeks! We're closing in!
