www.alex0paul.blogspot.com The shot of the championships competition during the 2001 Embassy World Championships. John Higgins 14-18 Ronnie O'Sullivan Ronnie O'Sullivan clinched his first World Championship title after a thrilling 18-14 victory over John Higgins at The Crucible. The 25-year-old produced some moments of breathtaking snooker - fully appreciated by the partisan crowd in Sheffield - to take snooker's top prize. The "Essex Exocet" finally got his hands on the trophy when Higgins missed an all-important red after making a break of 45 in the 32nd frame. O'Sullivan then went on to clear the table to collect the £250000 winner's cheque - and the one title that evaded his mentor Jimmy White. The victory was made the more sweeter considering the personal problems O'Sullivan has had to overcome over the past few years. His rollercoaster snooker career has seen him threaten to quit the game for good. But his new-found mental strength has helped him capture the world title he so badly coveted. The Rocket dominated from the early stages of the 35-frame final against the 1998 champion. He signalled his intentions within the first five frames, taking a 4-1 lead. But he coupled his infamous attacking game with deft safety play, displaying all the virtues of a true all-round champion. In front of Crucible crowd including former boxing world champion Naseem Hamed and Rolling Stones' guitarist Ronnie Wood, O'Sullivan produced some of his best snooker of the championship. www.alex0paul.blogspot.com Matthew Stevens fought back from a seemingly hopeless position to edge out Paul Hunter 13-12 at The Crucible. Stevens, who began the session 10-6 behind, took all four of the opening frames to level after an inspired run with breaks of 58, 53, 64 and 73. Hunter went 12-10 up but let Stevens back in with a missed match-ball pink in the 23rd. The ninth seed cleared up to narrow the gap, forced a decider and edged a nail-biting decider on the pink. Stevens was delighted with victory over his close friend but admitted his heart was in his mouth during a thrilling final frame. "I played four perfect frames at the start, but then Paul came back well and I had to dig deep," said Stevens. "It was an unbelievable end. We were both going for shots and missing - it was like the Davis and Taylor final. "I think Paul is one the top two players in the world - he was the man to beat at this tournament." A disappointed Hunter reiterated his desire to become world champion. "You've got to believe in yourself in this game and I do - before the end of my career I will definitely be lifting that silver trophy," said Hunter. "I was trying my hardest but I suppose the pressure did get to me a bit. "He was a bit lucky, but that's snooker and it's not the end of the world." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Second-round result (best of 25 frames): M Stevens (Wal) 13-12 P Hunter (Eng) 109-21 (109), 58-67, 65-70 (65 Stevens ... www.alex0paul.blogspot.com A review of the 2004 world championships. Ronnie O'Sullivan romped to a second world title after a convincing 18-8 win over Graeme Dott. Resuming 16-8 ahead after the Monday afternoon session, "The Rocket" needed just 20 minutes in the evening to take the two frames he needed for the win. The damage was done in an afternoon session in which O'Sullivan won seven of the eight frames - punctuated only by a 106 from Dott, the Scot's second ton of the tournament. Breaks of 92 in the first of the evening, and 33 in a scrappy second were enough to finish the inevitable win and give O'Sullivan another world crown. The 18-8 scoreline was all the more incredible given that Dott had won the first five frames of the match. At that stage, there was talk of the biggest upset since Joe Johnson's win over Steve Davis in 1986. But O'Sullivan fired in a 100 break to get off the mark and took the next three to close the deficit to just one. Dott was still playing well and was very much in the game at 7-7, but afterwards O'Sullivan began to pull clear. He finished Sunday's play 9-7 ahead and by the end of Monday afternoon's session, Dott knew the game was up with the Rocket two away from the win. O'Sullivan was focused and ruthless, and even the appearance of a streaker at the start of the evening session could not distract him. The final two frames were won quickly as O'Sullivan completed the most convincing win in a final since Stephen Hendry's 18-5 win over ... Snooker World Championships 20 |
