Touch of Claassens at the Rec rejuvinates Bath Bath claimed their first Aviva Premiership Rugby victory for two months after they battered title play-off contenders London Irish into submission at a sodden Recreation Ground. Bath had not won in the league since they edged past Irish 13-12 on October 29, and a fifth successive reversal would have signalled their worst Premiership results sequence for 10 years. But an early try by prop Anthony Perenise set the tone for an impressive heavy-duty performance from the Bath pack that saw Irish outmuscled. Fly-half Stephen Donald added a conversion and two penalties to put daylight between the teams, before scrum-half Michael Claassens sealed victory when he rounded off a brilliant 80-metre counter-attack sparked by full-back Nick Abendanon and wing Tom Biggs, then Bath were awarded a penalty try four minutes from time. Donald finished with 15 points courtesy of three penalties and three conversions, while the Exiles managed a solitary Tom Homer penalty in reply as they slipped out of the Premiership's top four. Irish showed the effects of just a five-day turnaround from their last league game - in contrast, Bath had more than a week - and that difference told during an attritional contest in gloomy conditions that was lit up by Claassens' touchdown. And to complete a miserable afternoon for the visitors, their England international full-back Delon Armitage, who had an abysmal disciplinary record in 2011, was sin-binned for a ... Seven-up Bath fizz against Warriors South African flanker Francois Louw scored on his debut as Bath made it two wins from two in the LV= Cup with a 46-13 thrashing of Worcester. Share The all-Aviva Premiership clash saw the home side run in seven tries at the Rec, fly-half Tom Heathcote touching down while also kicking four conversions and a penalty. As well as Louw, Bath also gave a first start to Samoa prop Anthony Perenise, a tryscorer off the bench in the 46-16 rout of Newport Gwent Dragons last weekend. Heathcote put the home side ahead with a penalty after seven minutes but they infringed at the restart and Joe Carlisle replied with a 40-metre effort from a difficult angle. Worcester strung together some impressive phases after drawing level, and a nicely-judged Carlisle pass set wing Josh Drauniniu free on the left but Dan Hipkiss was back to make the tackle. However a penalty followed soon after, allowing Carlisle to boot the Warriors in front. Bath hit back immediately when Ollie Woodburn offloaded to Heathcote, who raced in from 40 metres. The fly-half also added the conversion, putting Bath 10-6 ahead. They went further clear on 25 minutes as new recruit Louw finished off a couple of strong drives by Ryan Caldwell and Nathan Catt, who then also had a hand in his team's next try. The loosehead prop showed tremendous pace for a front rower, allowing him to collect a ricocheted kick on his own 10 metre line and launch a counter-attack from deep. The ball passed ... Farrell strikes to bury Bath Owen Farrell landed a penalty via both posts with the last kick of the game to earn Saracens the points in a pulsating finish at the Recreation Ground. Share The lead changed hands five times in the second half as Farrell's kicking regained the initiative for the Aviva Premiership Rugby champions only for Sam Vesty to edge Bath back in front with a penalty six minutes from time. The drama of the last few minutes saw Neil de Kock have a clearance kick charged down on his line but Bath could not apply the killer blow and Saracens cleared from behind their own posts. With only seconds left on the clock, the Londoners won turnover ball and Brad Barritt attacked down the left to win the final penalty from referee Greg Garner. Farrell finished with a tally of 23 points. The hosts won the try count 2-1 thanks to Nick Abendanon and Carl Fearns while James Short crossed for the visitors' score but a losing bonus point will be of little consolation. Bath took the field without skipper Stuart Hooper, ruled out with a bruised arm, so Dave Attwood made his Aviva Premiership Rugby debut in the second row after a summer move from Gloucester. David Flatman took over the captaincy as the home side looked to build on last weekend's encouraging 22-9 win at Newcastle. Saracens' starting XV, led by former Bath captain Steve Borthwick, were unchanged from their 'home' defeat by Wasps at Twickenham. Unusually for the Rec, the attendance was more than 2000 short of ... Bath Rugby 26 - 28 Saracens - |

Quins continue their 100% winning ways Harlequins maintained their perfect start to the Aviva Premiership season as tries from Chris Robshaw and Mike Brown helped them to a 26-13 win at Bath. 3 The league leaders, who now have a 100 per cent record after eight games, made a slow start at The Rec but eventually assumed control of the contest as they gained the upper-hand at the scrum, line-out and breakdown. Quins led 13-7 at half-time after a close-range effort from Robshaw while Brown's solo try six minutes from time killed the game off. Nick Evans added 16 points with his boot, while the hosts scored a solitary try through Dave Attwood and Sam Vesty added the rest from the kicking tee. Bath made the brighter start but it was Quins who took a 3-0 lead through Evans in the sixth minute, the New Zealander slotting over after Vesty had missed two early penalties. George Lowe and Robshaw then produced a brilliant double tackle to deny wing Tom Biggs as he burst over the line after Olly Woodburn had forced a turnover. But Lowe was at fault seconds later as he was caught out of position, allowing Attwood to bundle his way over for a try converted by Vesty. The lead lasted only five minutes, though, as Harlequins hit back with a try from skipper Robshaw, who showed good strength to muscle his way over the try-line after deciding against going for the posts from a penalty. Evans added the extras before slotting his second penalty over shortly afterwards to give Conor O'Shea's ... Bath Rugby 13-26 Harlequins - |

Bath Rugby squeezed into the final of the JP Morgan Asset Management Premiership Rugby 7s Series despite winning just one of their three group matches. A superior points difference saw them edge out Exeter Chiefs, who will feel a sense of grievance after beating their hosts 21-17 in a thrilling finale. A crowd of 4020 at The Rec saw Bath scrape into the final, which will take place at The Stoop on August 5. They will join an imperious-looking Harlquins side, who won all three of their matches tonight in style. Bath's evening began with a heavy loss to Quins, but the host's night was put back on track with a 26-22 bonus-point win over London Irish. Then came the West Country finale. Exeter's victory tied them on six championship points with Bath, but it was the latter who qualified for the finals by virtue of their points difference. Harlequins, boasting two England 7s internationals, proved far too strong for their hosts in the night's opening fixture. There was little in it in the opening exchanges.Wing Miles Mantella opened the scoring for Quins, but that was cancelled out by Tom Heathcote, who provided the finish after muscular work by Ben Mosses. From then on, however, it was all Quins. Bath's situation was not helped by the sin-binning of replacement Will Skuse, who was shown yellow for a try-preventing shove just seconds after coming on as a replacement. Quins capitalised on the one-man advantage to take the lead through a try by England 7s ace Ollie Lindsay-Hague ... Rugby: JP Morgan Premiership R |
