A montage about the sad stories in gymnastics. I cannot even imagine the pain of training your whole life for a dream then having it taken away. Footage includes Julissa Gomez, Christy Henrich and Yelena Mukhina, whose stories are perhaps the greatest examples of tragedy in gymnastics. Also included is Sang Lan, who is a very inspiring amd courageous woman. She has managed to keep a positive outlook on life and do many great things. She hopes to be one of the final torchbearers at next year's Beijing Olympic Games. The other gymnasts I chose becasue they were perhaps the best examples of gymnasts forced to retire in their prime, or before their career even really began. I also included those who never lived up to expectations, those supposed to be the next big thing who were then forced to watch their dreams slip away in the spotlight. Christy Henrich & Yelena Mukhina - Two sad stories in the world of gymnastics NO COPYRIGHT INTENDED!! I DO NOT OWN ANY OFF THIS FOOTAGE! Christy Henrich: While Henrich was succeeding in gymnastics, her health was beginning to suffer from an eating disorder. In 1989, a judge at an international meet told her she needed to lose weight. Apparently, Henrich took the comment to heart. Her drive to lose a few pounds progressed to unhealthy eating habits and, eventually, full-blown anorexia nervosa. The eating disorder was fueled further by the culture of elite gymnastics--which, in the late 80s and early 90s was ruled by "pixies", ie, small, underweight, prepubescent girls--and Henrich's own coaches, who allegedly made insulting remarks about her size and body type. At first, neither her family nor her coaches were aware of the situation. Her coach was Al Fong, who also coached Julissa Gomez, another gymnast that died. Eventually, Henrich's battle with anorexia took such a toll on her health that she was asked to leave the gym. Her weight dropped to about 47 pounds and her family intervened and compelled her to enter hospital treatment for her eating disorder. In spite of numerous treatments and periods of recovery, Henrich died of multiple organ failure at the age of 22 © Wikipedia Yelena Mukhina: Elena Vyacheslavovna Mukhina, born in Moscow, Russian SFSR, was a former Soviet gymnast who won the All-Around title at the 1978 World Championships at Strasbourg, France. Music: Raul Diblasio:: Solo Piano... I want to emphasize the fact that is not my intention to scare anyone into doing gymnastics. More than being scared by these accidents it's important to note their cause: Mukhina's accident was caused by a moved that is banned, Henrich died from anorexia which shows that starving yourself will never be the answer, and in the case of Sang Lan she admitted she got distracted which shows gymnastics has no tolerance for distractions, the world can fall apart but the only thing you must mind as a gymnast is your routine. Now anyone who wants to be an elite must know gymnastics history and these accidents are part of this history, but as I have said more than getting scared by them you must analyse the causes to prevent them from happening to you.
