Race Director Mark Elmore emailed me asking if we could post this clip of the 2006 National Championship 10K Snowshoe race from Bolton Valley, Vermont (just down the Interstate from the Ben and Jerry's factory). We weren't posting our videos on YouTube at the time, so it's nice that Mark remembered and asked. This clip features one of the best race start shots I've ever seen - lots of churning snow and hard breathing. Narration: Three feet of snow fell on Bolton Valley resort in the ten days before the race. That was just what the US Snowshoe Association needed for their biggest national championships ever. 176 athletes from 20 states and 3 countries showed up for the 10 Kilometer race. At stake, a berth on the US National team. These serious competitors qualified at state and regional races. The level of competition was high, the course challenging, but the mood was light as the athletes prepared. As they focused on the task at hand most of the runners had their eye on the prize: trophies for the champions and medals for winners in 22 age groups. There was time for a warm up jog before the short trek to the start line. Nearly twice as many athletes lined up to run this 10 K as started a year ago in Anchorage Alaska, testimony to the growth of the sport and its popularity in the northeast.
