Darryl Dawkins shattered the backboard two times in 40 days: November 11, 1979 December 6, 1979 Darryl Dawkins (born January 11, 1957 in Orlando, Florida) is a former professional basketball player, most noted for his days with the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets, although he also played briefly for the Detroit Pistons and Utah Jazz late in his career. *Biography Without Darryl Dawkins, the NBA would have been a whole lot less fun. Dawkins was an enormous man who skipped college for the NBA, broke backboards, named his dunks, dreamed up imaginary planets, played some darn good basketball, and generally spent a career as one of the most enigmatic and entertaining players in the game. The 6-foot-11, 252-pound Dawkins was terrifically strong, could run the floor, had a nice jumper, and could rebound and block shots. He averaged double figures in scoring nine times in his 14 years in the NBA, often ranking among the league leaders in field-goal percentage. He also played in the NBA Finals three times as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. On the flip side, Dawkins set an NBA record for fouls in a season (386 in 1983--84), and he never quite lived up to the expectations that had been heaped upon him when he was drafted out of high school. Hoping to follow in Malone's footsteps, the 18-year-old Dawkins renounced his college eligibility and applied for the 1975 NBA Draft as a hardship candidate. There was a only highlight version about this game, which was focused on Michael Jordan's plays. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Michael Jordan came out of retirement after 15 months to play in a benefit game (Scottie Pippen All-Star Classic - September, 1994). He still has the form, the grace, the speed, the slam dunks, the three-pointers, that send fans into a frenzy. Jordan scored 52 points to lead his team to a 187-150 victory. Jordan made 24 of 46 shots. As he left the floor, the crowd of nearly 20000 gave him a standing ovation. He then, bowed, waved to the fans and kissed the floor of the stadium. The same floor where he led the Chicago Bulls to an unprecedented three consecutive NBA championships. "I was kissing the Stadium goodbye and kissing goodbye to my years of playing there," Jordan later said. "But I was not kissing basketball goodbye, I'll always love basketball, and I'll always play it. I just won't play organized ball." After his spectacular game, Jordan noted, "I wanted to make sure that when I stepped onto the court, you guys couldn't say. 'You lost this' or 'You lost that.'" The game is the last event to be held at the 65-year-old Chicago Stadium. Michael Jordan (1994 Pippen Al |
March 28, 1995 Well, everybody knows this game. And I know there are other shorter versions of this game which are also excellent. Considering the circumstances, it is an extraordinary game even for Jordan's standards. Also, it's the game in which he declared he's "really" back. So I wanted to make another version with more replays, more context, a post-game interview with Jordan, quotes, articles and so on. Since almost everything has already been said about this game, I'll just point out a couple of quick things. First off, it should be mentioned that Riley's 94-95 Knicks was the #1 defensive team in the NBA, measured by points allowed per possession. The only player who was able to score 40 or more points against the Knicks that season was young Shaq (41). Other than him, only 3 players managed to score 30 or more points at Madison Square Garden against the Knicks in the entire regular season. And here comes a guy who hasn't played basketball for 18 months, scores 55 points on 21-37 shooting (57%) in just his fifth game, commits only two turnovers, and dishes out the game winning assist. Just too good to be true by any standards. One other thing is that there's a crucial play towards the end of this game which is not included in most of the highlights. Jordan is about to sink another jumper over Starks 1:20 to go in the game. Ewing comes out to double and manages to block the shot with his fingertips. It's very important because after the game Jordan said that play was ... Bulls @ Knicks - 1995. Jordan' |
